In this teaching innovation project, we employ simulation-based learning (SBL) in a cultural sociology classroom setting. Students take on roles in a “real-world” environment, and afterwards, engage in reflection, debriefing and assessment, becoming active agents in their learning process. Through connecting people and events experientially, students gain a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary social processes such as deliberation, decision making, conflict, and communication. Moreover, students have the opportunity to improve critical thinking skills and complex problem-solving skills through analyzing real-world situations. The SBL method is particularly suited for teaching cultural sociology as it helps students engage with often-abstract theories and connect them to everyday situations, making the theory come to life and become memorable to them.
