This project will involve theoretical and practical knowledge exchange in three different fields of surgery - plastic surgery, neurosurgery, and gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) surgery. Based on an already running Erasmus+ project SCaLPEL, the participants will study various cases from their departments, record videos from surgeries or share live streaming of these, compare, contrast, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of procedures relevant to their particular department. Moreover, the participants will have opportunities to directly observe the set up of the department of their partner and practically participate in and/or observe surgical procedures via visits (internships). The last element will be practical courses of surgery where surgeons can practice procedures new to them on bodies of donors (fresh frozen, embalmed) which is an opportunity not always accessible to the surgeons at their institutions. Furthermore, involvement of bodies of donors is promoting the reach of these "silent teachers" on an international level and gives them a unique opportunity to "teach" professionals whose skills and efforts save other human lives.
The participants will be mainly early career surgeons lead by more senior and experienced academics. Another innovative element is that active participation on the project will also be offered to undergraduate (UG) students of general medicine. This project aims to address the problem with generally low interest rates of medical students to follow the surgical career pathway. Giving the opportunity to socialise with and learn from their potential future senior colleagues, involving them in the practical aspect of departmental day-to-day life not only at the level of their home institution, but also on an international level aims to make the surgical profession more attractive to the students.
