Popis | This paper analyses long-term trends in the effect of parental break-up on child’s educational chances (the odds of attaining tertiary education). We focused on the effect of the experience of parental separation and distinguished it from the effect of family structure. We used data from the first wave of Generation and Gender Surveys for nine countries. Logistic regression models showed that the negative effect of experiencing parental separation got stronger as divorce became common. The explanation is declining parental conflict: as divorce spreads in the society, even couples with less conflicts separate and the child is negatively affected by loss of the family rather than relieved from a dysfunctional parental relationship. This pattern was confirmed in most countries. |
