Popis | Oxidative stress and subsequent activation of antioxidant mechanisms (both enzymatic and nonenzymatic) is well established in type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Metallothionein (MT) is a protein binding heavy metal ions (primarily zinc). MT substantially affects zinc metabolism and thus insulin secretion by beta-cell. Zinc levels are often decreased in diabetics due to its increased renal clearance. Association of polymorphism in the gene for zinc transporter (ZnT-8) with T2DM in genome wide association study (Sladek R et al. Nature 2007) underlines the role of zinc for glucose metabolism. We aimed to determine blood levels of selected heavy metals, MT, antioxidants and relevant SNPs in type 2 diabetics with kidney disease (at least microalbuminuric) and healthy subjects. |
