Popis | Problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and promoting active learning are the main trends in today’s education. By employing the constructivist view of learning students are encouraged to articulate their ideas clearly as well as to collaborate on tasks effectively by sharing in group projects. The paper discusses an interdisciplinary science-based language course enhancing all these skills needed for the 21st century work and academic environment. The course has been designed within the Impact project at the Masaryk University Language Centre in cooperation of English language and science teachers. The main objective was to join students of six scientific disciplines taught at the Faculty of Science and address one problem from different perspectives reflecting the specific tools and methodologies of the particular fields. The primary focus of the paper is to discuss different teaching strategies used in the course with regard to their effectiveness – as doing experiments, or solving real-world problems. Also a list of do’ s and don’ts will be shown based on the experience from the pilot courses provided to the students of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno. |
