Popis Barrier discharges are characterized by the presence of isolating–dielectric barrier in front of at least one of the electrodes. As matter of fact, part of the discharge development happens directly on this dielectric surface. Under atmospheric pressure conditions, the ionization happens via fast streamer mechanism, so their quantitative experimental investigation on sub-mm dimension is a true challenge. The electric field distribution development within volume barrier discharges was already shown by Kozlov et al.1 using a time-correlated single photon counting technique. Recently, we improved the electric field determination method2 (tens-of-microns spatial and tens-of-picoseconds temporal resolution) and we applied it on the surface barrier discharges here. Ionization propagating with speeds of up to 10to6 m/s is recorded in atmospheric pressure air. From the emission intensity of two spectral bands of molecular nitrogen the electric field strength is determined with high spatiotemporal resolution. Validity of all necessary assumptions was carefully analyzed.
