Popis BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim is to analyse hospital stays related to pressure ulcers (PU) in acute and long-term care facilities in the Czech Republic. METHOD: Hospital Episode Statistics - data from the National Register of Hospitalised Patients (NRHOSP) between 2007 and 2014 (n = 17,762,854) were analysed in an acute and long-term care hospitals in the Czech Republic (n = 276). POPULATION: The study included every patient being recorded in the NRHOSP (2007 - 2014) with the diagnosis L89 (according to the International Classification of Diseases, ICD-10). RESULTS: The NRHOSP included data from 17,762,854 hospitalisations; 46,224 of these were related to PU (i.e. 0.3%). The average length of hospitalisation due to diagnosis L89 was 33.2 (± 76.9) days and the average age of patients hospitalized with this diagnosis was 73.8 (± 15.3) years. The average PU length of stay was statistically different (p < 0.001) in an acute care (primary diagnosis: 26 days, secondary diagnosis: 20 days) but not in long-term care (primary diagnosis: 59 days, secondary diagnosis: 65 days; p 0.146). CONCLUSION: Pressure ulcers are associated with length of hospital stay. This study is the first one reporting data on this topic in the Czech Republic on such a large scale. Despite the valid information in the NRHOSP, a more valid and reliable electronic reporting system is needed to allow policy makers to evaluate the quality and safety concerning PU nationwide and internationally. This study was supported by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, grant no. 15 29111A with the title “The register of decubitus ulcers – integration strategy for monitoring and preventive interventions on the national level”.
