Analysis of patient's health condition after total knee replacement surgery and its development through time

Popis | Persistent knee pain while walking or at rest, often caused by osteoarthritis (destruction of cartilage and changes of its mechanical properties), leads to total knee replacement (TKR) using arthroplasty implants. Patient's condition is evaluated using Patient Reported Outcome Measure questionnaires. One of them is Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), which was designed to measure patient's degree of pain, stiffness and functional limitations through self-evaluation. Another commonly used questionnaire is Knee Society Score (KSS). KSS is filled by attending physician and combines patient's objective and functional characteristics. Both questionnaires are used at Martin University Hospital during examinations of patients after TKR since May 2009. This study includes 1003 patients, who underwent TKR in the period of 2009-2015. Patients were monitored before the surgery and then approximately 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after the surgery. The aim of this contribution is to retrospectively evaluate patient's condition by using WOMAC and KSS and compare the condition and its changes through time among three structurally different types of knee implants using functional data analysis and cubic splines in software R. |
