Popis | Three times within four years, at three different places, representatives of film industries from 12 countries met to discuss common dramaturgical, creative, technological, as well as ideological problems they were facing. The three rather robust events, named as Conference of cinema industry workers of socialist countries, certainly deserve an attention. They immediately provoke a series of questions: who, and why, initiated the international meetings? What was the intended impact of the conferences on the East-European film industries? How that happened that such massive attempt to coordinate the Soviet bloc cinema emerged in the turbulent years of the period of the Thaw, of a revolt in Hungary, of the subsequent campaign against “revisionism”, and of a cultural resurgence in Poland? This paper answers the questions and focus on the position of the Polish cinema and its representatives at the conferences. Through a study of the series of the massive international events, and of the way they were implemented and organized, we can see in details the practices of the Soviet international film diplomacy, its forcing mechanisms, its strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, we can better understand the pressure the Polish filmmakers and cinema officials had to face in the late 1950s on the international floor of the Soviet bloc. |
