Popis | Erected during the episcopate of Ambrose (374-397) and reconstructed at the end of the eleventh century, the Basilica Ambrosiana in Milan is am incredible place of memory and of presence of Medieval objects and monuments, either extant or whose presence is attested by their cultural imprint. Through the analysis of some of the masterpieces preserved in the complex — among which the chapel of San Vittore in Ciel d’Oro, the golden altar, and the canopy of St Ambrose — the present study explores the interaction between, on the one hand, the building’s topology and its objects, the relics around which the complex is built, and the concept of “migrants”, on the other. The focus lies on the manner in which certain objects came to be seen as reflections of the relics, and the material sanctity deriving from them made into an instrument of exclusion and inclusion in a complex ethnic context. |
