Popis | The decisions of the courts on the highest level take effect not only inter partes – between the parties of the dispute –, but also erga omnes, towards the public and the lower courts. Also, the legitimacy of judiciary depends on public trust to a large extent. Therefore, the article focuses on description and comparison of media contents dedicated to the highest-level Czech courts (Constitutional, Supreme and Supreme Administrative Court) in selected Czech media. While established research topic abroad, it stays uncovered in the Czech context. That is why the author aspires to overlap this distinction. Using content analysis, the research analyses an identification and examination of media framing used for the judiciary (2012–2016), as covered by selected print media. It also concentrates on the role and influence of judges as personalities who can actively influence the media message through different mechanisms. The results from print media analysis offer an evidence that the case-law is still being framed in stereotypical reportorial paradigms and needs reassessing from both the media and judiciary itself. The articles in the sample were selected by the method of issue salience (Epstein & Segal), based on the presumption that the most significant cases of the highest courts can be validly and reliably determined by using a specific quantitative analysis of printed media, in particular by identifying from the front page. This method is briefly described in the first part of the article. |
