Popis | With its centennial-long tradition (Douglass, 1909, 1919, 1921), our well-established discipline continuously generates new interest from other research fields. In addition to a wide range of successful applications in archaeology, climatology and ecology (Fritts, 1976; Schweingruber, 1996), the ever-growing diversity and number of contemporary tree-ring researchers suggest re-thinking the boundaries of our discipline. In response to this demographic change, with emphasis on exploring new avenues for addressing the important scientific challenges of the 21st century, this ‘Communication’ outlines the potential for our discipline to innovate cross-disciplinary research collaborations within and outside the natural sciences (Fig. 1); either as an annually resolved and absolutely dated archive or as a tool for precise timeseries analyses and signal detection. |
