Popis | Peer relationships in classrooms have potential to influence students’ lives beyond school. Interpersonal relationships form complex structures – social networks – and studying peer relationships should incorporate the structural properties of the relationships. This study aims to shed light on a number of dimensions of peer social network formation in classrooms giving special attention to the influence of students’ socioeconomic status. This study uses cross-sectional data from GA17-03643S project from Czech ninth grade lower-secondary school classrooms. Employing structural statistics, significance testing, ERG models, this study shows that high-SES students are more popular and have more friends. No difference in any of the studies structural variables is found between girls and boys. It shows the positive effects of mutuality, transitivity, gender homophily, and SES homophily. I argue that this is a result of subtle ways social capital in social networks is formed and reproduced. |
