Popis | Increased mortality of cardinal tetra infected with the mesomycetozoan parasite Dermocystidium was studied using optical and molecular biology methods. Elongated cystic structures filled with myriad spherical spores were observed in skin and skeletal muscle tissue. The surrounding tissue was slightly oedematous and infiltrated by macrophages and small lymphocytes. Sequences of partial 18S rRNA gene amplified from the spores clustered closely with D. salmonis from chinook salmon and cardinal tetra suggesting their conspecificity. The conserved morphology and 18S rDNA sequences raise questions around the diversity and host specificity of the Dermocystidium species. © 2020 FRS Marine Laboratory. All rights reserved. |
