Popis Lactulose-mannitol ratio (LMR) is the most commonly used test useful in diagnostics of many disorders of absorption in small intestine. An impaired intestinal epithelium can cause different, usually higher permeability for substances that would not cross the barrier under normal conditions. In the case of damaged intestinal wall the substances can be detected in blood or urine in higher concentrations. Urine sampling is a comfortable and non-invasive way to assess the gut permeability. The most reliable method of measurement of concentration of lactulose and mannitol in urine is HPLC.
