Popis Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), commonly studied in the context of legume-Rhizobia symbiosis, is a key component of the nitrogen cycle in nature and efforts to use this process include e.g. utilization of plants as a natural fertilizers or generating crops with BNF using bioengineering. Despite the potential of using this process in plant breeding and many years of research, there is still a lack of information on the regulation of dozens and hundreds of genes connected with BNF. Here, we compared a root nodule transcriptome of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) genotypes with contrast nitrogen fixation efficacy and by performing differential gene expression analysis we found 491 genes differentially expressed (DE) between plants with high and low BNF efficiency. Following annotation of DE genes revealed their function and enabled their connection with biosynthetic pathways. Overall, these results broaden our knowledge about transcriptomic landscape of red clover root nodules and connect the phenotypic trait of BNF efficiency with gene expression levels in situ.
