Popis | The active effort of the Etruscans in the Upper Tiber Valley probably led to the creation of a clearer border area and the establishment of new settlements along the Tiber River. The Tiber River itself represented more than just the borderline of the territory. It formed one of the crucial communication and intercultural trade routes in the region. On both sides of the river, people built continuous and reciprocal interactions. The benefits of these encounters were seen not just in the cultural and artistic spheres but also in economic, political, and administrative connections. The political boundaries of the territory were, in some places, difficult to determine. It is even possible to claim that there was some kind ofdead ground, which avoided the political and conceptual limits of the individual communities of Etruscan Perugia and Umbrian Gubbio. Indeed, it is possible to observe that on the edges of Etruscan political control, identity issues become much vaguer, perhaps due to the absence of scattered settlements in this less confident political environment. The main aim of the contribution is to point out the interconnectedness of Umbro-Etruscan relations and their reflection in the material culture of the border region. |
