Popis This chapter deals with local elections in the Czech Republic. The system of local government is very fragmented with 6,258 municipalities. Elections are held every four years, and a proportional system with open lists is used. Electoral turnout for local elections is lower than for national elections but higher than for regional and European elections. The turnout decreases from small to large municipalities. Elections are dominated by independent and local lists. Parliamentary parties run in only a small fraction of municipalities and win only a small fraction of mandates. Furthermore, only about 10% of mayors, who are elected indirectly, are affiliated with parliamentary parties.
