Popis The article builds on research by Czech Germanists (Malý 2019, Fiala-Fürst 2000, Jelínková 2010, Nešporová 2014 and others) on the reception of German literature in Czechoslovakia and at the same time offers a more general analysis of the specific function of paratexts in the totalitarian regime based on a case study. From the point of view of reception studies, the Czechoslovak reception of German literature was problematic from the start due to the cultural and political orientation in communist and socialist Czechoslovakia. For the authors of the West German literary group Gruppe 47, it was all the more complicated because, from the point of view of socialist censorship, additional ideological obstacles could be identified (Malý 2019). It can be assumed that Czechoslovak editions of the works of Group 47 members are suitable material for such case studies, which wish to identify and describe in more detail general strategies of publishers in an environment characterized by ideologically motivated censorship and political restrictions on freedom of expression. The aim of the present article is to analyze the paratexts, i.e. forewords, afterwords, commentaries, recensions, criticisms, etc., on the Czechoslovak editions of texts by Heinrich Böll and, on the basis of this analysis, to find out: a) how were these texts received in the Czechoslovak literary environment between 1948 and 1989 and what developmental tendencies can be identified, b) what role did paratexts play in this reception and what strategies were chosen by their authors (translators or literary scholars) to achieve the publication of these texts, often despite the obstacles to socialist censorship.
