Popis This chapter summarizes the development of environmental and sustainability education (ESE) from the perspective of a Central European country that has gone through the transition from a totalitarian regime to democracy. The chapter outlines the historical reasons for the prominent role of environmental education centers (EECs) in shaping the national ESE discourse in the initial decades after the revolution in 1989. It also analyzes the challenges that have emerged within the evolving cooperation of EECs with other stakeholders, in particular ESE academics. Further, the chapter describes the interaction between theory and practice, and stresses the necessity for building bridges between different types of stakeholders in order to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st century.
