Popis | This report describes the case of a solitary tumor protruding dorsolaterally behind the head of a senescent (12.5 mo), seasonal killifish Nothobranchius furzeri Jubb, 1971 (Cyprinodontiformes: Nothobranchiidae). The tumor was diagnosed as a fibromyxoma, a benign mesenchymal tumor. The tumor reached a size of 12 mm within three months. Unlike previously described fibromyxomas, this contained scattered islets of epidermal proliferation, likely overgrown by proliferating connective tissue. Senescence is considered responsible for tumorigenesis, as pathogen-induced etiology was excluded. This is new evidence of a spontaneous neoplasia in Nothobranchius furzeri, a model species in biogerontology previously suspected to be tumor-prone. |
