Popis | Practices of denunciation facilitate social control by providing access to hard-to-reach sections of personal networks. In contrast to dominant accounts, we analyze the situational nature of this process, reflected in the interaction between the actions of authorities and those of the public. A “processual” framework articulates the motivation to denounce as adaptive to social pressure rather than as a stable entity. We validate this framework by analyzing the rate of denunciation and the degree of proximity to those denounced, using data from the Iinquisitorial trial of Waldensians in Giaveno, Italy, in 1335, headed by Alberto de Castellario. A dynamic network actor analysis documents the inquisitor’s efforts to increase pressure on suspects and coopt their networks. The results reveal instability and ambiguity in denunciation. We find that initial collective resistance gave way to collaboration in response to the increasing pressure, and a temporal sequence in denunciation - from fellow villagers to congregation fellows, and to kinship members. This testifies to ambiguity in the motivation to denounce, as people simultaneously disclosed and concealed, trying to protect kinship members until they could no more. |
