Vertalen via een tussentaal in de 21e eeuw: acceptabel of uit den boze?

| Popis | In the Czech translation world, it has been common and even desirable since the mid-19th century to translate (valuable) literary works directly from the source language. Given that quite a large number of competent literary translators from Dutch are active in the Czech Republic, it may come as a surprise that titles nevertheless appear that are translated via an intermediate language, usually English. In my contribution, I present three small case studies. They concern originally Dutch-language books that were translated from English into Czech, namely a thriller, a children's book and a popular science publication. Based on interviews with the parties involved (translators, publishers), I try to get more understanding of the issues. Among other things, I would like to answer the following questions: Why was a translation from English chosen in the case of these three books? Is the choice due to the genre of the book or the author's desire, for example? Is this practice also seen in other minor languages? And what kind of publishing houses carry out this practice? |
