Popis | Considering the form of inheritance rights in the Czech lands at the end of the Přemyslid era, the period concerned (1150–1250) can be divided into two parts. Before 1216, the succession of rulers at Prague Castle was governed by the will of the duke Bretislaus I († 1055), which allowed the candidacy of all legitimate members of the family in descending order of age. On the other hand after 1216, power was to be passed exclusively to the firstborn son of the line of Přemysl Otakar I and Constance of Hungary. However, the reality was much more complex because too many dukes were vying for power in Bohemia in the 12th century. The principles of agnatic seniority often yielded to the interests of the nobility, who were entitled to choose their lord freely. The Czech lands were thus both a hereditary possession of the Přemyslids and an elected duchy. This may be the reason why no one felt the need to extend the rights of inheritance to female members of the Přemyslid dynasty or to blood-related families in the neighbourhood. |
