Popis A growing body of evidence shows a significant role of the neurodegeneration processes in drug-resistant epilepsy. Beta-amyloid, hyperphosphorylated tau, alpha-synuclein, and TDP-43 are called neurodegenerative-associated proteins (NAPs), and their pathologic aggregates are traditional hallmarks of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Both animal and human studies show increased levels of NAPs in the brains of the patients suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy of the temporal lobe (MTLE) compared to the age-matched population. The influence of the NAPs on brain electrophysiology is yet to be unraveled. In the current study, thirty patients from the two comprehensive epilepsy centers suffering from drug-resistant MTLE who underwent presurgical stereo- EEG (SEEG) monitoring and the anteromesial temporal resection were included. The tissue was immunohistochemically examined for the presence of pathological aggregates of NAPs. Interictal SEEG was analyzed for selected electrophysiological features (spikes, HFOs, and connectivity measures). Correlation between the electrophysiological measures and NAPs burden was made to ascertain the neurodegeneration signature in the EEG.
