Popis Purpose: The standard diagnostics of celiac disease (CD) is based on the positivity of specific antibodies and enterobiopsy. But there are several different forms and stages of the disease and the diagnostics could be complicated. The aim of our study was to demonstrate whether the ultrasound is able to reveal CD and the possibility of the ultrasound examination as a screening method. Materials and methods: During 2 years 100 patients with consequently verified CD were examined. We used the ultrasound machine Phillips iU22 with 9 and 12MHz linear probe. We observed several ultrasound signs of celiac disease. All these expressed parameters or at least one of them we considered as the positive ultrasound examination. The results were statistically elaborated using the ROC analysis. Results: Based on these statistical results was revealed, that the sensitivity of the ultrasound examination among patients, where all ultrasound signs denoting CD were expressed, was 81%. The specificity was 26,2%. Conclusion: From the obtained data it appears that the ultrasound is not suitable as the only screening method for CD. Regarding several forms and stages of the disease the ultrasound is very useful method with combination of clinical history and serological examinations.
