Alongside the main rankings, THE also compiles subject rankings in 11 areas: Arts & humanities, Business & economics, Clinical & health, Computer science, Education, Engineering, Law, Life sciences, Physical sciences, Psychology and Social sciences. The subject rankings are based on the same indicators as the main THE WUR rankings, but their weighting in the final ranking varies, even across individual subjects.
The subject rankings have been compiled since 2010 and initially presented only the top 50, and later the top 100 institutions in any given field. In 2017, when the published positions were expanded to the top 500 institutions for some of the fields, Masaryk University for the first time appeared in four of the THE's field rankings. At that time, MU was ranked 301st to 400th in the Arts & Humanities, Life Sciences and Clinical & Health rankings, and 401st to 500th in the Physical Sciences ranking. In addition to MU among the Czech universities also CU and PUO appeared in the subject rankings. In 2018, the published positions were further expanded and since then Masaryk University has been ranked in all relevant fields - it occupies positions in 10 out of 11 field rankings compiled by THE.
