Lecture by dr. Dorota Sosnowska (Instytut Kultury Polskiej, Uniwersytet Warszawski). In the first part of her course, Dorota Sosnowska is going to introduce the term ‘black space’ used by American artist Theaster Gates in reference to places abandoned by their inhabitants due to process of gentrification. The site-specific work Traumagutstrasse produced by Polish artist Robert Kuśmirowski will be compared with that of Gates. In the second part, she will tell a story of the production of Brygada szlifierza Karhana (1949) by a Czech author Vasko Kania depicting workers’ struggle in the tractors’ factory. It was produced in New Theatre in Łódź by a group of young, leftist actors who believed in political efficacy of theatre and wanted it to become a tool of establishing new, better social order.
