Whether it concerns language, literature, or culture in the broad sense, we can see that the axiological distribution is far from being homogeneous, as we can identify central elements or spaces and the ones that can be described as peripheral. The center-periphery dynamic can take place in different aspects. In linguistics, it concerns not only diatopic variations but also diastratic, diaphasic, diachronic, and diagenetic variations, as well as language policy and language planning. In literature, the status of the language intervenes in the cultural and intercultural hierarchies and becomes one of the elements of the structuration of the literary field both within a given culture, and in terms of relations between the so-called major and minor cultures.
The conference Centre and Periphery is an opportunity to discuss these matters in both areas of Romance philology: in Romance linguistics and Romance literature studies.
