The ongoing discussion concerning quality in education concurrently addresses one of its central
challenges - professionalisation of a teacher. The project aims to shed more light on the concept of
expertise in the teaching profession. Firstly, an extensive survey of theoretical and research studies of
expertise in the teaching profession will be carried out, then on the basis of its outcomes and on
consideration the specifics of the Czech cultural context the project is going to develop, pilot and verify
methods for the core of the project, i.e. research of the nature of teacher expertise, and in the next phase
research of the processes and conditions of expertise development and maintenance. The results may
provide information critical for reshaping and transforming pre-graduate as well as further teacher
education, for setting the standards of quality in teaching and, last but not least, for raising the status of
the teaching profession.

Results

Tangible outcomes of the project were offered to the professional public in accord with the plan. The original schedule
was observed, unfortunately during the project duration the requirements set by the Czech Science foundation were
changed and a published form of the final monograph was requested. This requirement we were unable to meet as
the review procedure and the publisher take more time than was available in the project – according to the original
schedule the analyses and a synthesis of the findings were planned till the end of September 2013 and in the
remaining three months we worked hard on the manuscript. Therefore the postponement of final report submission
was granted which enabled us to meet the obligations of the project.
