The preparation methods and properties of transition metal ferrites with the general formula MFe2O4 have been extensively investigated in recent years, as they represent an important class of magnetic materials. Nanosized materials often exhibit very interesting electrical, optical, magnetic, and chemical properties, which cannot be achieved by their bulk counterparts. The goal of our project will be the sonochemical synthesis of magnetic ferrite nanoparticles with potential applications in different fields, such as information storage, color imaging, medical diagnostics, magnetic carriers for controlled drug delivery, and catalysis. Synthesis and characterization of chemical, phase, structural, morphological, and magnetic properties of nanoparticles of ferrites ZnFe2O4, CoFe2O4, NiFe2O4, and MnFe2O4 will be studied. To this end we will examine ultrasound activated reactions of metal salts in aqueous solutions and metal complexes in organic solvents with the aim of preparing monodisperse nanoparticles of phase pure ferrites.
