The project is aimed i) to establish and validate a test batery using model soil organisms (microorganisms, nematoda, enchytraeids, earthworms, springtails), ii) to use these tests for evaluation of the effects of selected new priority POPs on soil ecosystem, and iii) to improve the ecotoxicological profile of these chemicals. The reason is that newly recognized priority POPs which are in environmentalistic focus and can be found in soils in significant concentrations, are not still ecotoxicologically characterized, especially with respect to soil organisms. As model pollutants are chosen: polychlorinated paraffins (industrial chemicals), PeCB (related to pesticide application), and azaarenes (indrustrial by-products). Following tests are included in the batery: effects on soil microorganisms, nematoda, enchytraeids, earthworms, springtails. These tests are well known and standardized in the world. However, the batery put them together is not established in CR. The results obtained will improve informational gaps about toxicity of mentioned chemicals, they help in scientific research of POPs ecotoxicology, and enable link to the further studies. A novel laboratory of soil ecotoxicology will be established and the quality of scientific work of applicant and undergraduates will be improved.
