The unfavourable age structure of the population manifested by the high proportion of persons of postproductive age puts higher demands on the quality of the residential environment, the forms of building respecting the needs of this social group, and the extent and quality of the social services providet for seniors. The aim of project is to contribute by empirical and theoretical multidisciplinary study to the solution of a serious social issue - the influence of the architectural environment on the health of old people. The project will present examples of existing systens of housing and services provided for seniors in the Czech republic and abroad, primarily in EU countries, and define the most serious problems of these systems. The forms of integration will be analysed and potential alternatives of tackling this problem will be shown by examples of well designed residential environment. After the identification of the missing categories of housing, the project will be focussed on the trends perceptible in the design of housing forms that support and extend the independent and self-sufficient life of seniors. Methods will be characterised by which architecture and architectural design may contribute to the independence and freedom of the live of seniors, mainly by providing adequate forms of housing and alternative care for seniors. On the basis of an expert analysis of the existing situation and recommended trends in old people care, adequate architectural and urban planning solutions of housing environment for seniors will be proposed.
