The aim of this project is to study the formation and transformations of confessional identity as expressed in the individual media, namely organizational and structural, visual and operating ones,as identification signs of the individual confessions in what was a multi-confessional milieu in the Czech lands in a period covering approximately the years 1380-1620. Research will be focused on 1) the constitution of the individual confessional entities, their mutual communication and institutionalization, 2) on the instruments-media of their identity (image, liturgy), and their formation and function in theology and religious practice. The project is divided into four interrelated partial tasks: P.Hlaváček, North-western Bohemia in the Process of Confessionalization (1500-1650), D.Holeton, Liturgy: A Largely Unexplored Aspect of Utraguism, M.Bartlová, Image in the Bohemian Reformation from the Late 14th to the Early 16th Century, M.Šroněk, Image as an Identification Sign in the Environment of Czech Utraquism from the Late 15th to the Early 17th Century. This will result in a collection of monographs by the authors mentioned above plus conference papers. Its prime aim is to present the Bohemian Reformation as a unique European phenomenon whose cultural and historical research represents a serious debt owed by Czech scholarship thus far.
