Although Europeanization is in social anthropology recognized as an important topic, empirically embedded
studies of EU enlargement at its East external borders are minimum. The proposed project empirically studies
the establishment of a new European space on case of making border of the EU in Polish-Belarus borderland.
Via ethnography of transborder migration and of a border-crossing I pursue how are performed and acted both
state borders/ borders of the EU and meanings ascribed to them by local and EU politics. I focus on practices of
performing: 1) how is the border by means of migration and regime at the border-crossing enacted; 2) what are
the agencies of individuals and their networks toward institutional changes caused by the EU politics in the
borderland; 3) what are competitive frames and interpretations of these politics by migrants and staff of the
border-crossing. The key outcome will be empirical contribution to Europeanization studies (monograph) and a deeper empirical embedment of political anthropology in Czech academic milieu and in university courses.
