The project is submitted in the category of publication grants and its aim is to publish a monograph “Early Sound Film and Czech Media Culture of 1930s”, whose manuscript is an outcome of the successfully completed research project no. 408/03/D174 (2003-2006). The partial results of the research were already published in ČR and abroad. The book is designed not just to fill in the gap in knowledge of the Czech cinema, but also to propose a model for advanced research of media history that matches the current methodological developments in Western Europe and USA, and thus could be competitive abroad. Instead of studying the coming of film sound in the traditional way as a step in the evolution of film art, the book analyzes it as a “media change” in a broader context of the interrelations between aesthetic, cultural, social, political, economic and technological factors. Its methodology is based on the premises of the “new film history”, which focuses
on the broad scope of primary sources and on reception. The book will consist of ca 600 pages, 7 chapters and special supplements.
