The aim of the project is to examine the heritage of Nikodim P. Kondakov in the works of his pupils, the scholars of Seminarium Kondakovianum and the art historian André Grabar, during the interwar years.
Kondakov reached Prague in 1923, backed by the Ruská Akce. Here, he drew around him a community of Russian émigré scholars that after his death ideated a periodical devoted to Byzantine culture, Seminarium Kondakovianum, published until 1938. Meanwhile Grabar fled from Russia to Strasbourg, where he earned his second Ph.D. with Gabriel Millet. This two-fold education led him to developed an original methodology that flaw together political, theological and economic perspectives in the analysis of the objects of art.
Seminarium and Grabar are two crucial points for the creation of a new international network of Byzantine studies. Scarred by their personal experience as émigrés, they developed a new supranational perspective on Byzantium, beyond national and local identities. Byzantium became the new terra franca for the intelligentsia, close to another myth of this epoch – Eurasia.
