The project will focus on the social and theoretical sources of the secularization debate and describe the
constitution of the "secularization paradigm" which dominated for a long time "mainstream" sociological
thinking about religion in modernity. The concept of secularization will be analyzed with respect to its
teoretical grounding in secularization theories as well as to its practical use in empirical research. Multidimensionality
of the concept and its relationship with the concept of religion will be emphasised. The role of
the concept of secularization will be also reflected in multidisciplinary context (religious studies, social and
cultural anthropology, political science, history). The primary aim of the project is a summarization and
systematization of the existing theoretical knowledge on relationship between religion and modern society with
respect to the process of secularization. This may represent a good starting point for further theoretical
investigation into and reflection of the situation of religion in the globalized world of late modernity.
