Our objective is to provide a participatory account of road accidents and offer evidence base for an alternative, critical theory of automobility. A comparative analysis will be provided using templates for comparing experiences, reflections, and experiments both across social labs and national/cultural contexts. Current theories of accident causation utilize a systems theory approach based on the interaction between environment, technology, and the human. Our research is to render very different results than systems models. The research question of this project is the following: ‘What are the constitutive elements of a phenomenologically informed understanding of road accidents in urban environs?’ This would potentially transform the research and innovation landscape and the justification for autonomous driving. A phenomenological appropriation of accidents will not only collect experiences related to actual events but also focus on non-events that may aid our knowledge of what accident experience actually is.
