Description The aim of the work is to present the approach to working with films in helping activities that is focused on a film’s potential to be a mediator between a specialist and a client. The provided scheme for analysis of a film, development and organization of follow-up tasks is based on differentiation of roles in comprehension of a film: spectator, expert, critic and practitioner. Strategies of using films in helping activities (filmotherapy, professional training, analysis of social issues) are described via relations between these roles as operators of analyzing a film and creating a programme of its usage. The article deals with the questions of applicability of filmotherapy and one’s professional preparedness for filmotherapy in the frames of discussion of the conditions for successful realization of each of the roles and strategies. The experience of using films in the work with foster families as well as teaching students at the course “Using films in helping activities” (2010 – 2012) is summarized in the article.
