Description The author of the present article deals with the less usual positions and functions of humour in literature on the example of world literature, but mainly of modern Czech prose. He accentuates the importance of the original, a wider conception of humour going back to philosophy and deep layers of human individuality where humour means a certain reaction upon the irrational kernel of the relations between man and the space. There are several types of humour according to the criteria of classification, some of them with a flavour of melancholy and the feelings of despair. Humour often leads to the impasse demonstrating the existential situation of man as tragic and incomprehensible.
