Description The Home Passion Altar was donated to the collections of the Francis Museum, Brno (now the Moravian Gallery) by Václav Kajetán Hontschick in 1822. The original attribution to the Italian baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini was rejected in 1899 by the museum conservator Alois Franz, who placed the work in the context of south-German carving and sculpture. The artist of the altar based the majority of the figurative reliefs on prints by Albrecht Dürer, especially from The Small Passion cycle (1511). The connection between the central scene of Crucifixion and the Augsburg Rehlinger Altar (Staatsgalerie Augsburg) from the workshop of the Apt family (1517) supports attribution to an Augsburg arts and crafts workshop. Owing to the deliberately archaic style, the proposed dating of the altar to 1580-1600 is only approximate and needs to be verified by further study. The character and rendering of the altar show that it was not primarily intended for private worship of its owner but might have been commissioned for an patrician “kunst-chamber”. The comprehensive restoration of the altar carried out in 2011 by Markéta Pavlíková renewed its artistic qualities and craftsmanship, and also brought some new information regarding its manufacture.
