Description | The issue I deal with is a bit controversial not just for the Church but for the history of the 20th century in general: the position taken by Pope Pius XII against Adolf Hitlers intentions and actions during World War II. Pope Pius XII is often criticized for his officially neutral stand, his inaction and his silence; sometimes is he even accused of a poorly hidden fascination with Nazi ideology and antisemitism. On the contrary, in truth, the relatively frequent actions he took to rescue particular groups of people, mainly the Jews, not just Christians, are mostly forgotten and his intentions are overlooked. Pius XII is actually one of the most misunderstood Popes, and one to whom is history probably the most unfair. |
