Description | Some Vietnamese families in the Czech Republic look for Czech nannies. Such care arrangements contrast the dominant model of domestic/care work in which immigrant women work for women from majority. Drawing upon qualitative research conducted with Vietnamese mothers, Czech nannies and children, the article focuses on the motivations of Vietnamese immigrant families for hiring Czech nannies and motivations of Czech women for working as nannies in Vietnamese families. I argue that the motivations of Vietnamese families must be understood in the context of post-migratory biographies and that they mirror geographical (not social) mobility of families. At the same time, far from being economically driven, the motivations of Czech women to work as nannies in Vietnamese families must be understood as their expressions of gendered biographies of care. I offer the conceptual framework of mutual dependency for understanding the mutual nature of the relationship and diversity of motivations on both sides of care contract. |
