Description | The paper discusses a change that liberalism is currently experiencing. According to a prominent American constitutional law expert, Michael W. McConnell, the change has a significant effect on the status of religious freedom. While the old liberalism had its roots in Christian theology and therefore recognized the importance of religion in human life, the current liberalism perceives religion as authoritarian and irrational. Because the new liberalism holds adverse and suspicious feelings toward religion, it is not in favor of special constitutional protection for religious freedom. McConnell considers secular liberalism to be a sectarian ideology that aims to use power to promote its dogmas. McConnell calls for the restoration of truly pluralistic liberalism, which would facilitate the coexistence of peoples of various beliefs within civil society. |
