Description | The Paradox of the Heap, a prototypical example of so called sorites paradox, is based on the impossibility of determining borders of application of vague term "heap". If an object in front of us is or is not a heap is determined by a number of grains of sand. "Heap" can therefore be considered as an example of a term which allows for a linear ordering of objects relative to which the term "heap" is soritical. The Paradox of the heap can therefore be formuated as a series of questions or as a sorites polysyllogism, we can also formulate mathematical induction and line-drawing versions of this sorites paradox. In this presentation I will focus on multidimensional and combinatorial vague terms – on vague terms that do not allow for a linear ordering of objects in their range of significance. I will show how we need to proceed if we want to formulate some versions of sorites paradoxes using multidimensional and combinatorial vague terms. |
