Description | Castroesophageal reflux disease is a condition which develops when the reflux of stomach contents causes recurrent and troublesome symptoms or complications. Management of the disease is based on lifestyle and eating habits modification and pharmacotherapy. Acid suppression by proton pump inhibitors is the main treatment option. Castroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic condition and many patients require maintenance therapy. Surgical therapy is an alternative option for selected patients with well documented reflux, especially in them with suprae-sophageal symptoms and inadequate symptom control on pharmacotherapy. Efficacy and safety of long term treatment with proton pump inhibitors and surgery are approximately comparable. |
