Description | Morphological transformation of cells of bacteria complex Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato has been researched for many years. In terms of diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease is particularly significant ability to create cystic form, which allows cells to survive in adverse conditions, either during cultivation or in the body, such as during antibiotic treatment. The aim of this study was to determine whether the cystic forms of Borrelia afzelii of different ages are able to reconvert back to the spiral forms not only in vitro but also in vivo in laboratory mouse Mus musculus (BALB/c) infected by such cysts. ELISA method was conducted to determine the infectivity of cysts of various ages, using the values of IgG and IgM specific antibodies from serum samples from infected individuals. To determine the ability of cysts transformed back into the spiral form in vitro, culture method in BSK II medium was used, along with dark-field microscopy and proprietary method Duladur. There were no different effects of cystic forms of cells on the antibody response of experimental subjects found during the study. Conversely an ability of cysts to reconvert back into the spiral forms during in vitro cultivation depending on their age was observed. Within the frame of preparing the cystic forms a formation of a bacterial biofilm Bbsl was observed, whereas its occurence has been published recently. The demonstrated capacity of the cystic form and the formation of the biofilm Bbsl are other aspects that has to be taken into account when diagnosing and treating the Lyme disease. |
