Description | This paper deals with the institute of slavery. It summarizes few aspects of slave position in Roman law. However, the main attention is paid to one statement from the Digest or Pandects of Justinian (D 50, 17, 32 Ulp. 43 ad Sab.). The wording of the provision “omnes homines aequales sunt“ is very similar to the wording of the US Declaration of Independence (all Men are … equal). This wording appears in situation when slavery is very usual both in ancient Rome and in the US. Aim of the paper is to emphasize similar features of either provision that enable speculation about Roman-law influence upon the Declaration of Independence. |
