| Description | Churches and religious organizations were always major actors in the public sphere in European history. The nature and intensity of the relationship between church and state found expression in the presence of significant political cleavage from the end of the 19th century onwards. The church-state cleavage helped to shape the structure and content of the dialogue among various political actors. Throughout Europe this dialogue continues today albeit with different content and dramatically lower intensity. It is no different in the Czech (Czechoslovak) environment. The aim of this article is to find out how the Czech political parties’ positions towards the relationship between church and state changed during the 20th century (from the birth of modern political parties in the late 19th century until 2010). In order to reply to this question we analyse the relevant political parties’ (electoral) manifestos. First, we identify the core values of the parties, and then we focus on identifying their (ideological) stances on the issue. |
